Byron research helping to protect whales

whales in byron bayRecent claims that a research program at Byron Bay is harassing whales has been rejected by all involved.

The whale research project is being coordinated by the Southern Cross Centre for Whale Research based at Southern Cross University (SCU) and involves a range of organisations including NPWS (NPWS), Cape Byron Headland Reserve Trust, SCU, University of Newcastle and the University of Queensland.

NPWS Northern Director, John O'Gorman said the project is designed to gather information about whale movements and behaviour, helping the better manage for their protection in NSW waters.

"Information is also being gained on the overall population of whales along the coast which is indicating a very positive increase," Mr O'Gorman.

"The project operates under a number of research permits including a permit from the NSW NPWS and a permit from Environment Australia. Both these scientific research permits have strict guidelines in relation to approach, what activities can be undertaken under the permits and monitoring disturbance including a clause that contact must be broken with a pod of whales if the animals show signs of disturbance.

"The Environment Australia permit requires an advertisement to be placed in the Australian Newspaper inviting public comment on the proposed program before a permit is endorsed.

"There was extensive media interest associated with the project this year attracting over 50 media items including local, regional, national and international newspaper, radio and TV coverage during the 5 week survey. This media coverage promoted the research program and Byron Bay.

"At the start of the survey on the 15 June a public meeting was held at the Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club. At this meeting details about the proposed program and the range of activities undertaken under the scientific licences issued to the project. Over 200 people attended this public meeting."

"The project also has endorsement from the South Pacific Whale Research Consortium which involves researchers from America, New Zealand, Tonga, Cook Is, Tahiti, New Caledonia, and Australia.

"The boat used during the whale research program is clearly identified with the NPWS name and logo."

Mr O'Gorman said there also appears to be some confusion about the weed management of the Cape Byron Headland Reserve. $80,000 has been allocated to habitat restoration work over the past two years.

"There has been an ongoing weed management program since 1991at the headland which includes Bitou Bush a well as over 30 introduced species such as Madeira Vine, Winter Senna, Five leaf Morning Glory and Coral tree," Mr O"Gorman said.

"Additionally 52 regeneration sites have been established within the 100 hectares that make up the reserve.

"The plan of management of the Reserve is expected to be approved in the near future and weed control will be a priority program outlined in the plan."
