The Dolphins Of Byron Bay

Hello! It is estimates that there are around 120 bottlenose dolphins living in Byron Bay.

On almost any given day there are dolphins swimming in the waters that surround Cape Byron. It's true. There are two Ocean Kayak adventure companies in Byron Bay who will provide you with perhaps the best opportunity in Byron Bay to encounter them closely in their natural habitat...but remember folks, these are WILD dolphins! It's certainly a privilege rather than a guarantee to see these graceful animals.

The wild dolphins of Byron Bay are a recipe for smiles amongst those lucky enough to experience them. Whether you live locally or are visiting Byron Bay, you will no doubt see the dolphins that use the coastal waters surrounding Cape Byron as part of their natural habitat....if you spend time looking for them that is! Try early morning or late afternoon when conditions are generally calmer.

Use the Cape Byron walking track to get an eagle's look at the waters below the cliffs where the dolphins can often be found patrolling the windblown eastern section of the Cape. This is one of the best ways to first glimpse these incredible animals; sometimes swimming solo, but most of the time in small pods of 6-20 animals, sometimes many more. The best way to visit the dolphins' natural habitat, however, is to visit them "up close and personal" on your adventure with Dolphin Kayaking!

Remember that these are special animals, and that care must be taken when approaching wild dolphins. They are an integral part of the ecology of Byron Bay, and particular regulations dictate how they must be respectfully approached. They are charismatic animals, and it is not uncommon to have dolphins swim right under your kayak!

Much remains undiscovered about these animals; for this reason Dolphin Kayaking works with researchers from the Southern Cross University Whale Research Centre, and welcomes others interested in these dolphins and other marine life in Byron Bay to contact us.
